A theodolite is a topographic precision instrument for measuring azimuth and zenith angles. The horizontal plate has two vernier scales for precision reading of angular observations, while the vertical plate (mobile and stable with telescope) only has one.

Movement around the horizontal and vertical axes is controlled by thumbscrews. Levelling is done by two thoracic levels situated on the level platform.
