Century, Spanish
An architect and painter, Claret’s style shifted towards
Constructivism
an art and architecture movement born in 1914 in Russia which became known particularly after the October Revolution. The movement defends an active engagement of the artwork with its surrounding space. The term was first used by Kazimir Malevich (1878-1935) in 1917 to contemptuously describe a work by Aleksander Rodchenko (1891-1956) and it did not have a positive connotation until the
Realist Manifesto
from 1920.
with lyrical nuances, which he materialised in a subtle play of curves and straight rhythms in planes and bands with nuanced tones. Claret was influenced particularly by Paul Klee (1879-1940), Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) and Vassily Kandinsky (1866-1944).
In 1959, he founded the Cero-Figura group together with Hernández Pijuan (1931-2005), Subirachs (1927-2014), Tharrats (1918-2001), Vila Casas (1920-2007) and the art critic Santos Torroella, and in 1962 he won the Joan Miró Drawing Prize.
Besides Spain, his work has been exhibited in Japan, United Kingdom, United States, France and Germany.
