David Arteagoitia has a PhD in Printmaking and is currently Director of the Drawing Department at the School of Fine Arts, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), in Leioa (Vizcaya), where he teaches graphic techniques. He furthered his education at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He has taken part in many courses and seminars at renowned cultural centres, such as Fundación BilbaoArte (Bilbao), Arteleku (San Sebastián), the Fuendetodos printmaking workshop (Zaragoza) and the Teruel Summer University, where he has worked alongside prominent figures such as Don Herbert, Gabriella Locci, Ana Soler, Juan Lara, Ana de Matos and Paco Aguilar, among others. He currently combines his teaching work with research and his career as a visual artist. His primary focus is on contemporary printmaking, mainly in large-format graphic works on paper that push the envelope of conventional printmaking with the use of painterly materials and textured supports, bringing his work closer to painting and sculpture. His doctoral thesis on Serigraphy of Aggregates with Water-based Binding Vehicles explores textures and alternative supports in printmaking, issues he continues to investigate and promote in seminars. Arteagoitia is the director of Open Portfolio FIG (Bilbao) – an international encounter for emerging printmaking. He collaborates with institutions such as Camberwell College of Arts and the London College of Communication in London, the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing (China), the Casa Falconieri Foundation in Sardinia (Italy), the George Enescu University of the Arts in Iași (Romania), the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (Portugal) and the CIEC international centre of contemporary printmaking in A Coruña, where he teaches specialized courses and seminars in graphic art.
