Fernández’s interest in art came from his uncles, Carlos and Luis, who were master wood carvers. Though he started studying at the School of Arts and Crafts in Oviedo, in the sixties he moved to Madrid, where he worked as an assistant in the studio of the sculptors Juan de Ávalos (1911-2006), José Luis Coomonte (1932), Enrique Pérez Comendador (1900-1981) and Ramón Lapayese (1928-1994).

Thanks to drawing classes he attended at Círculo de Bellas Artes, he met several artists from his generation, including Miguel Ángel Calleja (1945) and Cristóbal Toral (1940).

In 1972, together with his brother Enrique, he opened a foundry and a sculpture workshop called Esfinge.

His work has been showcased in several solo and group exhibitions in Madrid, in his hometown of Oviedo and in various European cities, including London and Basel. His sculptures have received many awards including third prize at the National Exposition of Fine Arts in 1968 and first prize at the Ciudad Real National Competition of Visual Arts in 1982.
