After graduating with a degree in Humanities from the University of Barcelona, Franquesa went on to study at the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona, where he would later join the faculty as a teacher and hold the post of Vice-Dean of Cultural Extension. Besides showing his work in a number of group exhibitions, he had his first solo show in 1978 at Fundación Joan Miró in Barcelona.

Influenced by the work of De Kooning, an old friend of the artist, Franquesa’s work is close to American
, particularly in his gestural approach and the pathos of his brushwork, overflowing the limits of the canvas.
