Frau started studying art in Huelva, but he soon moved to Madrid to enrol at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts, where he was a pupil of Antonio Muñoz Degraín (1840-1924). In the 1920s he exhibited his work with the Sociedad de Artistas Ibéricos, and in the 1940s he moved to Mexico. In the 1970s Frau returned to Spain where he remained for the rest of his life. His early work was related to Naturalism and Symbolism, under the influence of Daniel Vázquez Díaz (1882-1969). He mostly worked within the genre of landscape, which he rendered in a palette clearly influenced by
, with a prevalence of earthy, green and blue tones.
