A sculptor mostly dedicated to the creation of busts, his excellent social connections gave him a chance to take on large commissions such as the sculptures of the Paris Opera and the Louvre, or the colossal group on the top of the Exhibition Palace at the Champs Élysées representing France Crowning Art and Industry. In 1856 he was appointed Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur.

He trained in Paris under David d’Angers and Jean-Jacques Pradier, and took part in the annual salons in 1845, 1847 (where he won a Third Class Medal), 1850 and 1852.
