This self-taught artist from Cadiz began working in a naturalist style before moving towards a more personal reading of reality, influenced by his friends Chema Cobo and Guillermo Pérez Villalta, both members of the 1970s
New Figuration
an art movement from Madrid in the early 1970s. Its defining feature was a provocative use of colour in response to the darkness and the Informalismo of preceding periods. Its members defended the creation of art rooted in Spanish tradition, removed from the trends prevailing in Europe at the time.
movement.
Rojas’ works contain echoes of Piero della Francesca’s modelling, Malevich’s superimposition of planes, De Chirico’s study of space, Magritte’s plays with visual perception, but, above all, a concern for space.
Represented by Galería Magda Belloti, Algeciras, the artist had his first solo exhibition in 1983. With that same gallery he presented his works at the ARCO art fair in Madrid from 1984 to 1989, and again in 1992 and 1993. In 1999, a retrospective of his work was held at Palacio Provincial belonging to the Cadiz Provincial Council.
