A Spanish fin-de-siècle painter, Santa María Sedano created meticulous yet simple landscapes paying testimony to his love of nature, continuing the tradition of 19th century Realism.

He took part in National Expositions with differing results: he won a First Medal in 1908 for his work Ángélica and Medoro and a Medal of Honour in 1946 for Figures of Romance.

Throughout his career he obtained many other distinctions, including the Cross of Alfonso X el Sabio, and he was named a member of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

Around 1900, he began working as a teacher at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid, where he was appointed director in 1934.
