A self-taught artist, Vázquez began his training in the 1960s in Santander, where he had moved with this family. Originally abstract, in the mid 1980s his art evolved towards figuration. It was at this time when he joined the Atlántica group.

His practice focuses mostly on painting, though he has also made forays into printmaking, poetry and occasionally photography. In 1977 Vázquez published his first portfolio of etchings and poems.

In 1982 he benefitted from a scholarship from the Spanish Ministry of Culture. Some years later, in 1987, Vázquez won the First Prize at the 2nd Painting Biennial of Albacete. In 1995 he obtained an Endesa Visual Arts grant.

He has exhibited his work in countless solo and group shows. His first one-person exhibition was held in 1968 at the Museo Arqueológico Provincial in Orense. His works have been seen in many Spanish cities and are included in major public and private collections in Spain. He has taken part in several editions of the ARCO art fair, mostly with Galería Juana de Aizpuru. In 2004, the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea in Santiago de Compostela organised a retrospective of his work.
