18th Century German

Painter of animated landscapes and riverscapes.

A pupil of Johann Alexander Thiele (1685-1752), he lived in Holland from 1740 to 1760, when he reached the peak of his career. Many prints were made based on his compositions.

His small-scale landscapes, particularly of the Italian countryside and views of the Rhine, were animated with figures and animals in a style similar to that of Christian Georg Schütz.
