Four artworks from the BBVA Collection participate in the exhibition El Japón en Los Ángeles. The archives of Amalia Avia, organised by the Regional Government of Madrid. This is the first major posthumous retrospective of the artist, with more than a hundred and ten pieces that review her work from a current point of view and question and complement the reading of her style as realist. The exhibition of her paintings is enriched by the presentation of photographs from her archive.

"I paint what I cannot photograph. I use photography only as a model. If they are Madrid subjects, I take a photograph and then I go back several times to see the place while I paint it. If the place is not Madrid, what I paint is based on the memories I bring back with me. On the other hand, my realist colleagues paint from life. It's all very well to paint from life, but everyone has their own method and habits".

As a member of the group of "Madrid realists", a large part of the exhibition is devoted to her facet as a portraitist of the exteriors of the capital. Within this theme are the artworks in the BBVA Collection,  El carro del trapero, Pasaje de la Alhambra, El Banco Hipotecario de España, Bidones. Estación del Norte, excellent examples of the melancholy and serene atmospheres that define her work.
