The goal of the exhibition Juan Navarro Baldeweg. Hacer y azar, curated by Ignacio Moreno and organized by CentroCentro, is to shed new light on the creative practice of an artist whose work has been largely absent from the art scene in Madrid over recent years, thus giving this project special interest. The core principles underlying the artist’s visual experimentation are explored in a selection of works across various visual languages, including painting, sculpture, architecture and installation.

Vencejos (Swifts, 1981), belonging to the BBVA Collection, is a core piece in the exhibition discourse, embodying the very tenets on which Juan Navarro Baldeweg grounds his artistic practice. This work, a seminal piece within the artist’s painting production, clearly evinces Navarro Baldeweg’s transition towards a visual language in which colour takes on expressive transcendence, coupled with influences such as
and the work of Matisse. The compositional structure, organised in bands of colour elusive to different times of day, and the schematic depiction of birds in flight—the swifts referenced in the title of the work—forge a poetic bond with the landscape and culture of Castile. In this sense, the painting synthesises the relationship between nature, perception and gesture that defines the artist’s multidisciplinary approach, and reinforces the conceptual thread running through the exhibition by combining chance, rhythm and contemplation.
