The Museo de Bellas Artes de Badajoz (MUBA) is presenting the exhibition “María Blanchard: pintar el mundo desde dentro” (María Blanchard: Painting the World from Inside), dedicated to one of the most outstanding women artists of the twentieth century. This will be the first time that a monographic exhibition has been organised in Extremadura dedicated solely to this seminal figure of the avant-garde.
On view in the museum of fine arts from 5 March to 14 June 2026, the opening of the exhibition is scheduled to coincide with Marzo Violeta (Purple March), a cultural initiative that organises activities to promote the visibility and recognition of women artists.
The exhibition affords a complete overview of María Blanchard’s creative universe, focusing on some of the main subject matters she explored throughout her work: everyday scenes featuring women and children, as well as her celebrated Cubist-inspired still lifes. The exhibition is curated by María Toral, a highly experienced freelance curator and Doctor of Fine Arts.
Among the works on exhibit is Composition avec tache rouge (1916), from the BBVA Collection, a key painting for a proper understanding of Blanchard’s expressive depth and artistic vision. Painted in the year Blanchard settled permanently in Paris, the canvas depicts a maternity scene—the earliest known example in her oeuvre—which is particularly notable for its chromatic harmony and the dynamic interplay of straight and curved lines. In it, one can discern certain affinities with the work of Juan Gris and Diego Rivera, with whom she moved in the Cubist circles of Paris, while at once offering a warm and profoundly human vision of
