María Moreno. Towards the Essence of Light is the first major survey of the work of this key figure in the renewal of Spanish Realism. The exhibition brings together 69 paintings and drawings spanning from her beginnings in the 1950s to the early twenty-first century, coming from more than thirty public and private collections.
Organised in collaboration with Antonio López and María López Moreno, the exhibition traces the evolution of Moreno’s work and her search for an essential form of painting centred on light. It also includes works by Antonio López that evince their mutual admiration and the influence they exerted on one another.
Among the selected works is Calle de Palos de Moguer (1962), from the BBVA Collection. In her depiction of the neighbourhood of Palos de la Frontera in Madrid, María Moreno recreates the everyday atmosphere and distinctive light that would define her mature artistic style.
The exhibition focuses on María Moreno as an individual artist, beyond her association with the so-called Madrid Realists. Following its presentation at MUREC in Almería, the exhibition will travel to Granada (October 2026 – February 2027) and Bilbao (March – June 2027).
