The BBVA Collection has placed the painting Battle of Villalar, by Manuel Picolo y López (Murcia, 1851-1913), on temporary deposit at the Cortes de Castilla y León, the seat of the regional parliament in Valladolid, where it will go on exhibit alongside Los comuneros de Castilla (The Comuneros of Castile), by Juan Planella, from the collection of the Prado museum. The two works depict the outbreak and the conclusion of the so-called Revolt of the Comuneros, one of the most significant events in the history of Castile and León.

Manuel Picolo transports us back to 23 April 1521, the moment when the troops of King Charles I emerged victorious in the battle against the comuneros of Castile, the uprising led by Juan de Padilla, Juan Bravo and Francisco Maldonado. The aftermath of the battle is one of desolation: cannons bogged down in the mud, smoke, fighting still raging in the background, the defeated rebels taken prisoner. Awarded an honorary certificate at the
in 1887 when it was first presented, the painting reflects the interest at the time in rehabilitating the
Comunero movement as a symbol of freedom and resistance, here casting the vanquished as the heroes of this event.
