This year of 2023 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), an artist whose influence during his lifetime and indeed right up until day is hard to overestimate. Spain and France jointly commemorate the painter with “Celebración Picasso 1973-2023”, a comprehensive programme of fifty exhibitions and events exploring Picasso’s life and work to be held between April 2023 and March 2024.

Coinciding with the twentieth anniversary of the founding of Museo Picasso de Málaga, the museum is joining in this commemoration with The Echo of Picasso, an exhibition highlighting the artist’s impact on global culture by means of a dialogue between his work and that of thirty artists active throughout the twentieth century—among which we can find names like Willem de Kooning, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Louise Bourgeois—and others who continue active today, like Farah Atassi, Richard Prince and Jeff Koons.

The show includes this piece by Antonio Saura, created in 1983 in response to an invitation from Danièle Giraudy, the then director of Museé Picasso in Antibes, for the exhibition Bonjour Monsieur Picasso, organized as a homage to the artist ten years after his demise. In the canvas painting Dora Maar 15.5.83, Saura freely recreated a work by Picasso which had caused a major impression on him: Femme au chapeau bleu 3.10.39, a portrait of the painter, photographer and sculptor Dora Maar.
