In his ongoing exploration into the materiality of the image, Arteagoitia challenges printmaking conventions by merging graphic, painterly and sculptural techniques. The artist plays with the relief inherent to the texture of printed materials and the flatness of organic supports, producing a striking contrast that conveys a tactile sensation to the beholder. This tactile quality of his works is further enhanced by his treatment of colour, which he makes physically palpable by means of the tangible presence of material (carborundum) in the print.

He couples this use of colour with the dynamic expressiveness of the stroke, of the gesture, contrasting it with flat planes of colour. Here, in Event Horizon I, one can readily evince how this painterly gesturality is confronted with the geometry of flat colours in a stripped-down palette that underscores the balance between fullness and emptiness, between black and white. In addition, the use of techniques such as
and silkscreen enables him to analyse the process of creating images. For Arteagoitia, printmaking is all about leaving a mark, a trace that challenges the notion of originality in contemporary printmaking. In his work, the artist invites reflection on the matrix that enables reproduction and the singularity of each individual print.

This work entered the BBVA Collection in 2023 thanks to the BBVA Acquisition Award at the 12th FIG Bilbao held annually at Palacio Euskalduna. The primary goal of this specialized art fair is to promote printmaking and work on paper, not just modern and contemporary but also from all eras.
