In 1985, the year before this painting, Broto had moved to Paris. His bright colours and glazings would now become more opaque, denser, and darker, as in the case of this canvas, where fields of colour with varying tones are distributed across the painting, over which the image is drawn with thick outlines.

As is customary in his practice, Broto continued painting landscapes that spring from his memory, from his recollections, to which he adds isolated elements that anchor the composition.

Once again, we have his customary colour impastos, spontaneous brushwork and
.

This composition is presided by the flight of stairs mentioned in the title. The plastic and symbolic power of this majestic, quasi baroque staircase is enhanced by the vertical format. A symbolic object in almost all cultures, in the case of Broto the connection with this element can be traced back to Joan Miró (1893-1983) and Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012), in which the stairs is a form of communication between the mundane and the spiritual, a path towards the asceticism of the spirit.
