This Galician painter is considered a benchmark among current Spanish figurative painters. After studying Fine Art in Madrid he soon came into contact with artists of the time such as Guillermo Pérez Villalta (1948), Luis Gordillo (1934) and Darío Villalba (1939-2018). His trip to the United States gave him an opportunity to get to know American painting and the work of the English artist David Hockney (1937) at first hand.
He became friends with the Chilean realist painter Claudio Bravo (1936-2011), whom he visited several times at his home in Morocco. This explains the degree of perfectionism Cidoncha attained in his work, as well as his fondness for Orientalist art.
He painted landscapes, portraits and interiors, endowing each of them with descriptive realism based on close observation and enhanced by a certain spirituality.
In this work the little library decorated with artworks and antiques is conceived as a quiet, private place, designed for pleasure and relaxation. The artist is very conscious of this and is careful in the way he frames the picture and uses perspective. His views of secluded spaces are reminiscent of seventeenth-century Dutch domestic interiors in their intimacy and the way they faithfully capture the surroundings. He treats each object individually, using contrasts of lighting and chiaroscuro which make them more vivid and realistic.
