Antonio Fortún Paesa was a tireless artist, always searching for new forms of expression. His collages from the 1970s heralded a newfound interest in geometry, readily visible in this particular work, and in the 1980s his focus shifted gradually more and more towards this concern, first in his watercolours from the Mediterráneo Series and later in the depiction of a number of different motifs including arches and doors.

Composición en azul dates from a time when Fortún practiced figuration within a cubist aesthetic, which explains the change in technique from acrylic to oil. His embrace of
could be interpreted as a homage to painters like Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Georges Braque (1882-1963) or Juan Gris (1887-1927) but also as a revaluation of a language that, in his own words, “has the power to solve many of the problems in aesthetics today.” This painting is made using the clear, sober and low-contrast palette characteristic of this moment in his output. In turn, the forms are precisely outlined and delineated.

At a time when painting was exploring new paths, Fortún Paesa looked to the past in search for a reason to move towards the future.
