Josep Amat’s practice was basically grounded in landscape, whether it be rural, urban or seascape, which he approached with great formal simplicity while constructing the scenes in great detail.

Nature, to which he felt a strong attachment, was always a stimulus for this artist, who carefully chose the space he wanted to depict. He meticulously studied the light effects best suited to his needs and then applied the colour at ease, succeeding in bestowing the depicted elements with a unique essence, removed from a mere depiction of reality. The observation of the environment and its representation by means of colours and personal, quick and clean-lined drawing became the signature of his production.

In this painting, Passeig (Promenade) one can make out the lines used to draw some elements, such as the trees and the benches, while the passers-by are only slightly sketched.

Thanks to his loose, vibrant and dynamic brushwork, Amat creates a duality between reality and the imagination, with light bathing the ensemble—a light from above, characteristic of the central hours of the day if we are to judge by the shadows cast on the ground by the trees and benches.

This works irradiates a sense of enthusiasm and vitality, encouraging spectators to immerse themselves in this scene of figures strolling along the promenade, placidly reading or contemplating the immensity of the sea.
