Josep Amat
(Barcelona, 1901 − 1991)
El cremallera de Montserrat
1935
oil on canvas
100 x 81 cm
Inv. no. CX00173
BBVA Collection Spain
This beautiful aerial view represents the arrival of the rack railway train to Montserrat. In this work, which seems to have been painted in situ, Amat captures the moment with remarkable realism, perceived by in the activity of the lightly sketched passers-by and the smoke billowing from the engine arriving to the station. The buildings in the foreground are seamlessly integrated into the craggy landscape. A partial view of Montserrat, one of Catalonia’s most significant and iconic mountains, can be seen in the top left corner.
Nature, which he felt strongly attached to, was always a stimulus for this artist, who carefully chose the space he wanted to depict. He meticulously studied the light effects best suited to his needs and then applied the colour at ease, succeeding in bestowing the depicted elements with a unique essence, removed from a mere depiction of reality. The observation of the environment and its representation by means of colours and of a personal, quick and clean drawing became the signature of his production.
In this landscape, Amat uses an abundance of grey tones with lots of different nuances, combined with ochre tones to lend the whole a somewhat nostalgic air.
