Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez believes that the attribution of this work to Gerrit Lundens in the bank’s inventories is perfectly plausible, for its style coincides with that of Lundens. This artist painted genre scenes in Amsterdam, specialising in depictions of inns, barber shops and peasant gatherings, often with a moralising intent as is the case here.

In this painting, the treatment of light shows a masterly handling of chiaroscuro, a technique in which Lundens was highly accomplished. For that reason, around1650, Frans Banning Cocq, a captain of the Regiment of Fusiliers, commissioned Lundens with a copy of Rembrandt’s Night Watch, featuring the captain as part of the portrayed group. This oil on board may be regarded as a mature work by the artist, painted around 1660-1670.
