This is a highly characteristic work from the early phase in the career of this Catalan painter who cultivated portraiture and religious themes but above all scenes featuring rural settings and farmers, the sea and fishermen. His naturalistic style, focusing on either the sea or the countryside, acknowledges the influence of the School of Olot. He worked meticulously in his studio, using highly spontaneous and natural studies and drawings from life.

Here the artist portrays a peaceful scene in the early morning light. A group of fishermen carry the nets while, behind them, a young boy with a basket is scanning the horizon, perhaps waiting for more of the group or watching boats as they dock in the harbour. Both the boy and one of the fishermen are wearing the typical sash and barretina cap. Small fishing boats returning to port are cut out against the background of a calm sea.

The artist manages to achieve an atmosphere of tranquillity with an economical palette. With its pinkish tones, the morning light gradually begins to take over the background of greys and blues. The restrained palette is broken by the two red spots of the fishermen sashes, that help to reinforce the depth achieved through the brightness progressing in the horizon. The smooth and thoroughly studied chromatic gradation achieves a highly naturalistic atmosphere.

His rural, sea or beach scenes earned the artist widespread popularity, turning him into a chronicler of the life of the peasants and fishermen of his time. His works always revolved around the characters and the landscape is a mere accident that acts as the backdrop, conveying to the beholder an optimistic viewpoint, a joyful and laid-back atmosphere in which the people are comfortable with their austere yet satisfying lifestyle and see their social condition as something natural, without the slightest hint of a revolutionary inclination or desire for change.

Baixeras Verdaguer represents his characters both at work and in their moments of leisure, never showing the fatigue, effort or physical deterioration involved in their labour. He only reflects the optimism, happiness and beauty of his characters and of their surrounding world.
