Lucio Muñoz developed one of the most singular trajectories within the distinctly Spanish movement known as Informalismo, focused on the exploration of matter as an essential element of painterly language.

His work is grounded in the direct manipulation of materials, particularly wood, which became his main support from the late 1960s onwards. Through cutting, burning,

and reliefs, Muñoz transformed his surfaces into an expressive space charged with tension and force, where matter ceased to be a mere adjunct and became the protagonist itself.

This is the context in which we can situate this Project for a Sunset (1967), a work representative of the artist’s mature period. Executed in mixed media on wood, it constructs an abstract landscape in which light and colour conjure the atmosphere of a sunset without actually representing it directly. Dark, earthy tones combined with eroded textures generate a sensation of depth and restrained emotion.

The work does not describe a specific place, but rather seeks to suggest a sensory experience in which matter itself, worked with intensity, is the vehicle through which landscape is transmitted. In this way, Muñoz transformed the support into a field of experimentation and expression, in one of the most outstanding examples of Spanish
