Johann Christian Vollerdt travelled through Switzerland and along the banks of the Rhine, painting many small board paintings like this one.

His style would suggest he was well conversant with Dutch painting, probably owing to the fact that his master, Johann Alexander Thiele (1685-1752), also from Germany, was educated in Holland. Thiele passed on to his pupil the influence of Dutch landscape from the second half of the 17th century. The work comes from the British market.
