The title under which the painting was recorded in the inventories (Niña) was later specified by the descendants of the painter as Napolitana. The piece was done by the artist during his stay in Italy, along with several depictions of the Roman countryside, one of which received a gold medal in 1891.

An example of the predilection of Valencian painters for the subject of children, it shows the influence of the artist’s masters, Lorenzo Casanova (1844-1900) and especially Casto Plasencia (1846-1890), as well as of Ignacio Pinazo (1849-1916) in the attitude and composition. The figure, drawn with accuracy, manages to capture a softly melancholic grace, which matches the finished quality of the execution and the temperate colour characteristic of the bucolic genre that had triumphed in France and which experienced its peak in Spain shortly before 1890.

The figure is represented with a certain monumental bearing with her back to us, in contrapposto, standing out against a landscape with the horizon set in the middle of the canvas. The tones used are soft, so the complementary green and red liberally applied by the artist do not contrast excessively.

On the back of the canvas there is a sketch of a child’s head.
